Description: Elkhart, Indiana is located in north central Indiana. The NS main (The old New York Central Chicago
line) passes through town. There is parking and good viewing from the Amtrak Station in town which is the former
NYC station. The platform is old and has many uneven spots so watch your footing.
Approximate # trains per 24 hours: 55 including Amtrak’s Capitol Limited, and Lakeshore Limited
Nearby RR stuff: Across the tracks is the National New York Central Railroad Museum N 41.6807,
W 85.9695, with a fair amount of equipment on display. Elkhart is also home to the Robert Young Rail Yards, which
are the second-largest freight classification yards in the Norfolk Southern System. West of the city, that NS
classification yard N 41.6692, W 86.0090 runs parallel to Old US-33. You can park at various spots along Old US-33
(Lincoln way) and see yard movements and the main line fuel racks.
Other interesting or fun stuff: Elkhart calls itself the RV capital of the world, and there is a new and extensive RV
Museum north of Elkhart near the Indiana Tollway exit 96, off County Road 17 N 41.72771,

Personal observation: In the past many years, Elkhart has had a less than stellar Main Street and Downtown. In the
Spring of 2015, I noticed a marked improvement, The powers that be are making progress on filling the storefronts.
There are many more nice restaurants and watering holes within walking distance of the station for railfan
